I for one can’t believe that July is already upon us. It seems like the summer months just fly by every year. This year especially since Charlie is starting Kindergartner this year. This mom can’t complain because we were able to get him into the Georgia cyber academy, so he’ll be attending school right here from home. This August is going to be full of new adventures! One thing that I love to do no matter what adventures we may have going on is to make sure we have fresh blooms in the house. If you’ve been following for a while then you know how much a I adore fresh flowers. They’re on our grocery store list every week. You can read here some simple ways to arrange store bought flowers.

When we bought our house two years ago the yard was horribly over grown. We removed several trees and shrubs and still have years worth of work to do. Most of the work we’ve done outside has just been clean up. This spring we made a point to start the landscaping process. We spend a lot of time on our back porch and thought that it was the perfect place to start. Our yard is very wooded and private. We don’t mind though because it means we don’t have to have shades on our windows and we get to see deer weekly. With a wooden lot comes a lot of shade. This didn’t bother me though. One thing that I have really missed from our last home was all the hydrangeas we had planted. I knew the back porch area was a perfect place for some. I’m so thrilled to say that I cut my first blooms from them and they’re just lovely!

For this arrangement I got to use a few hydrangeas from the shrubs we planted this spring along with a couple gardenia stems. These particular hydrangeas are of the Limelight variety.

I added a few flags that we picked up in a pack of three for just a dollar or two at Target. It gives the arrangement a festive and patriotic touch. The flowers are sitting in a jar that I placed down in a basket I had handy. I love the look of this vintage wicker. There’s something so classic about fresh flowers in an old wicker basket.

Our backyard has a retaining wall right up against our porch with woods behind it. It creates the cutest little ally. We eventually want to give it a pretty finish to hide the concrete look. From the moment that I saw the back yard I pictured a lush and colorful English garden. We eventually want to put in a pea gravel path on both sides to add to the English feel. We dug up all the underbrush and planted four hydrangeas, two gardenias, two butterfly bushes, an azalea, three mountain snow pieris’ and a hosta. We spread bags upon bags of mulch and plan to continue it underneath Charlie’s trampoline. I don’t love the view of a trampoline but it sure provides of hours of fun at our house.

This spring we were only able to get around to the right side of the ally. This fall we hope to start the process on the other side. You can kind of see from this photo the other side area. I should have taken a photo of that side, but I didn’t think about it until now, ha! It’s quite overgrown but it does have a beautiful camellia bush, gardenia and a Japanese maple tree that we plan on keeping when we re-landscape.An Easy 4th of July Flower Arrangement - Sincerely, Marie Designs (9)

For now I’m more than content with our lovely hydrangeas. Every week they have more blooms, so I just keep clipping! It’s been such a joy to have flowers in the house that we’ve grown ourselves. Do you garden? What’s your favorite thing to grow?
