Masters Egg Salad Recipe (2024)

This Famous Masters Egg Salad Recipe is a popular menu item served at Augusta National’s concession stands during the Masters Tournament.

This creamy egg salad recipe that fills the Masters famous sandwich has carefully been kept a secret. However, I have meticulously created this copycat recipe using the ingredients listed on a sandwich bag I brought home from the Masters tournament many years ago.

According to the National’s website, the sandwich was first served at the tournament in the 1950s and has been a favorite choice among patrons ever since.

After you learn how to make the Masters egg salad, I’m sure you will also want to make more of my great Masters Tournament copycat recipes. Their pimento cheese sandwiches, Chicken Salad on Brioche Bun, and Peach Ice Cream Sandwiches.
Although not served at the golf tournaments concession stand, this Green Jacket salad, Arnold Palmer Drink, and Augusta National Sour Cream Pound Cake are all famous Augusta recipes perfect for serving at a Masters Party.

Why This Copycat Recipe Is Authentic

Many copycat recipes on the internet add all kinds of ingredients that Augusta National Golf Club does not have in their egg salad. There is no olive oil, mustard, celery, black pepper, or seasoning in a proper Masters egg salad sandwich.

How do I know? I live in Augusta, Georgia, and have attended the Masters since high school. I now have 15 grandkids, so that might give you a perspective on how long I have been going.

Masters Egg Salad Recipe (2)

Each year I bring home a bag of concession stand items to give to family members that did not get to go. I save the bags for reference, checking to see if they have changed their recipe. However, if Augusta National has something extraordinary, they leave it alone. It’s all about tradition. I am confident the list of ingredients has stayed the same.

Augusta National focuses on perfection, not big and showy but simple perfection in every tiny detail, just like this egg salad recipe.

What Is In The Masters Egg Salad Recipe?

This recipe might seem too simple, but it is like the real thing served at the Masters. Simple, high-quality, fresh ingredients are the key to the sumptuous egg salad served on the course in Augusta.

Now I don’t want to start a war! However, southerners are passionate about their mayonnaise. The ingredients on the sandwich bag did not name any specific mayo. However, they most likely use an excellent quality mayo such asDuke’s Real Mayonnaise.

Step-By-Step Instructions

With a few simple tips, you can make homemade egg salad just like what is served at the Masters.

Boil 12 eggs

  1. Carefully place eggs single layer in a pot of cold water.
  2. Bring the pot to a rolling boil over high heat.
  3. Take the pan off the heat, cover it, and let it stand on the burner for 15 minutes.
  4. Drain the hot water from the pan and fill it with cool water and some ice. When the hard-boiled eggs are cool, chop them into small, even-sized pieces. The whites should be small pieces the size of peas. You could use a food processor for this step, but be careful not to process eggs smaller than green pea size. Place the chopped eggs in a medium bowl and set aside.

🥚 Tips For Peeling Hard Boiled Eggs 🥚

  • When you have farm-fresh eggs, they can be challenging to peel. To make them easier to peel, refrigerate them a week to 10 days before cooking. This allows the eggshells to take in air, which helps to separate the membranes from the shell. If you buy older eggs from the grocery store, you will not need to let them sit in the fridge.
  • Hard-boiled eggs are easiest to peel right after cooling. Cooling causes the egg to contract slightly in its shell. If you are in a hurry, give them an ice water bath for a few minutes to speed up the cooling process.
  • To peel a hard-boiled egg, gently tap the egg on the countertop until the shell is finely crackled all over. Roll the egg between your hands to loosen the shell. Start peeling at the large end, holding the egg under cold running water to help ease the shell off.

Mixing The Egg Salad

  1. Mix the mayonnaise and paprika in a medium-sized bowl until creamy and smooth.
  2. Next, put the chopped eggs into the bowl with the mayo. Using a large spoon, blend until the egg yokes and mayonnaise form a creamy consistency. The golf tournament egg salad is creamy and almost smooth.

Assembling The Sandwich

🔑 Ok, I’m giving you the key to the perfect Masters Golf Tournament egg salad sandwiches. The egg salad must be served between two slices of really fresh soft white bread.

  1. Lay two slices of bread on your cutting board. Scoop 1/3 cup of the egg salad onto the white bread.
  2. Using the back of your spoon or a butter knife, spread the egg salad evenly up to the edges of the crust.
  3. Cut the sandwich in half to form two triangles.
  4. Place the sandwich in a green sandwich bag to serve. Again, the green bag makes it authentic.
