Below is part of a breakdown on Browns GM Andrew Berry’s chances of pulling off a Draft Day gem without a first round pick from cleveland.com writer Tim Bielik.
CLEVELAND, Ohio —The Browns head into the 2024 NFL Draft in a familiar place. Just like the previous two seasons, the Browns don’t have a first-round pick as a result of the Deshaun Watson trade.
But the good news for them is Andrew Berry has been able to find talent without a first or even a second-round pick considering he’s also traded his second each of the last two drafts.
In 2022, Berry surprised many by drafting cornerback Martin Emerson Jr., who had a legitimate case to make the Pro Bowl last season with four interceptions and 14 pass breakups, which tied for the team lead in both categories.
The next year, the Browns ended the slide of Dawand Jones by taking him in the fourth round at pick No. 111. He played very well in reserve of the injured Jack Conklin after Week 1 in 2023, starting nine games and looking like a quality starter at right tackle before a knee injury ended his season.
Berry has also drafted some solid contributors in addition to those two in recent years. Jerome Ford showed he’s a capable receiving running back, Alex Wright blossomed toward the end of his second season and David Bell and Cameron Mitchell have had their moments.
So will Berry be able to do it again before he gets his first-round pick back for 2025?
