But the program, a comedy about the heartbreaks and headaches of two freshman girls in a suburban high school, has already been dismissed as a sure loser in the ratings by some industry soothsayers. This does not sit well with Anne Beatts, the 35-year-old satirist who produces the show, supervises the scripts, and who won two Emmys for writing on the original "Saturday Night Live." "I don't think the show is getting such a bad rap except by a few people who work for ad agencies and who are in their late 70s," Beatts grumps over a huge breakfast on Santa Monica Boulevard. "And that, unfortunately, has been reprinted in a few places and in the trade papers and it's bad because people in the industry read that and they don't particularly check out where it comes from." "Square Pegs" is set at dear old Weemawee High School in, says Beatts, "Anytown U.S.A." (the school seen in the show is an abandoned one in Norwalk, and Pat Nixon once taught there). The pegs of the title are two best friends: Patty Greene (Sarah Jessica Parker, 17) who moans that she has worn glasses "since the age of two," and the shorter and plumper Lauren Hutchinson (Amy Linker, 15) who has braces on her teeth and loves to go ga-' ga over what a lusty adventure life is.

They say things like, "I think it's so unfair that guys don't get cellulite." The show is fresh, human and funny, and not just the usual collection of stock sitcom pratfalls and insults. So Beatts rejects the idea of the show being called "an intelligent 'Laverne and Shirley." "I've never really understood 'Laverne and says Beatts, now on her second croissant. "I think they were good when they were still in Milwaukee, but now it's such a strange show because they have to remind you at the beginning what year it is and who are these two crazy girls who are acting like 12-year-olds but are really in their late '30s. And they are living in Hollywood in 1965. It's like they might as well be on the moon, as far as I can see, it's so completely detached any reality.

"I guess the catch-phrase that I used to describe our show was that it was the Dobie Gillis Show of the '80s, although that it not such a dynamite catch-phrase because a lot of people don't even remember the Dobie Gillis Show. But, fortunately, one of the net- work executives was Dobie Gillis so he That would be Dwayne Hickman who starred as Dobie on CBS from 1959-1963 and is now a vice president at the network. 01 110 One criticism that has- been made of the show is that the two heroines suffer some sort of failure every week and who wants to see people fail? "Well, they have small victor ries, which is really what most of us have," Beatts says. "I don't think that it's downbeat. They continue to struggle.

It also seems to me that we have some similarities to in that high school is like war; you can't leave, And in they fail every week in a sense, and yet they are still there, they are still bringing in new bodies, and the war goes on." Beatts has not worn glasses since the age of 2 but she has worn them since the age of and the character of Patty is: obviously modeled after her, Beatts says she has not used any direct incidence from her own, high-school years (1959-1962 In, Somers, New York). "I wasn't the, class clown," Beatts says. "I was more of a nerd in high school." Although, "Square Pegs" is not going to be what Beatts calls an "issue show" the network has ruled out sex and drugs as topics: anyway and that's OK with -but will delve instead into what Beatts says are the real of high school years. Things like: blemishes and broken hearts and; thinking you're the ugliest person in the world. It "I remember the first meeting with executives at CBS ultimately.

degenerated into everyone sitting" around and exchanging horror: stories about high schools," she says. "Adolescence is where you really experience things. very, vividly, so what I was hoping is, that I can tap into that memory, and that people will watch it. because they will go 'Oh God, that's just what I was And 'that there is a kind of dare I universality to that experience."
